Upon his return to Manchester University, he began performing with singer/songwriter Peter Hammill and keyboardist Nick Peame; employing one of the name calling from Judge Smith's list, the band dubbed itself Van Der Graaf Generator (afterward a machine which creates electrostatic electrical energy), in the end earning an acute cult following as one and only of the era's leading artistic production st. John Rock groups. Despite the early involvement of Judge Smith and Peame, the grouping plant true succeeder as a vehicle for Hammill, whose dark, existential philosopher lyrics made him the focus of considerable attention. After the release of the 1968 single "People You Were Going To," Judge Smith left Van Der Graaf Generator, which by and then consisted of Hammill, keyboardist Hugh Banton, bassist Keith Ellis and drummer Guy Evans. The grouping soon split, and in 1968 Hammill entered the studio, apparently to record a solo album; however, he finally called in his ex-bandmates for assistance, and when The Aerosol Grey Machine appeared, it did so under the Van Der Graaf Generator constitute. Although Ellis was replaced by Nic Potter and woodwind instrument player David Jackson, the reconstituted grouping continued on for 1969's Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other. After 1970s H to He, Who Am the Only One, Potter bygone; the Generator recorded one more LP, 1971's Pawn Hearts, before Hammill left for a solo vocation, putting an end to the group. After quintuplet solo efforts, all the same, Hammill over again reformed Van Der Graaf Generator in 1975 for Godbluff. Following a couple of 1976 albums, Still Life and Existence Record, Banton and Jackson exited; as merely Van Der Graaf, the band recorded The Quiet Zone with new violinist Graham Smith. After a 1978 unrecorded set, Critical, the radical officially disbanded, although most members made appearances on Hammill's subsequent solo records. Twice during the 1990s, Van Der Graaf besides reunited for one-off gigs, and in 2005 released a reunion album, Present. |

KYLIE Minogue is set to release a cover of the Barry Manilow hit Copacabana, but is reported to have upset the song's lyricist by including her own name in it.
The Australian singer, who has been performing the upbeat track during her KylieX2008 tour, is planning to record the track for release, but is said to have angered the lyricist Bruce Sussman by asking for the woman's name in the song to be changed from Lola to Kylie.
Minogue reportedly wanted the lyric, "Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl" to be changed, but Sussman refused.
"Bruce was furious. He told Kylie, 'No way. Her name's Lola. Not Lola Minogue, not Kylie,'" a source told gossip website MSNBC.
Minogue's sister Dannii recently revealed she wants to do a duet with her older sibling.
"I definitely want to do a duet, it's just about finding the right thing and the right time," she said.
"I miss singing so I am planning to do some more next year. I did a duet with Kylie on her tour last year - we sang Kids which was amazing.
"Every time we watch it back, we fall about laughing, especially when we are swinging each other around because we used to do that on roller skates when we were young."

Lemmy Kilmister subject of planned docu
Will include interviews, onstage Motothead footage
NEW YORK -- The life and career of Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister is being celebrated in a new documentary, tentatively titled "Lemmy" and slated for release in 2009.
The film promises fans more access than ever before to Kilmister's life, and includes interviews with past and present bandmates and such peers/admirers as Slash, Dave Grohl, the Clash's Mick Jones, Alice Cooper, Steve Vai and wrestling superstar Triple H.
Directors-producers Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski (both of whom have contributed to Billboard) are shooting the film on a combination of HD video and super 16mm film. Other giants from the world of metal and hard rock will appear in the film as well, with details to be announced. "We haven't heard the word 'no' yet after any interview request," Olliver said.
"Lemmy never ceases to surprise me," Orshoski said. "You think you know who Lemmy is, but you have no idea. If you think you have Lemmy all figured out, trust me. You don't!"
"Shooting Lemmy is like filming dangerous wildlife. He never does what you expect him to do, and he never does anything you want him to do," Olliver said with a laugh. "A lot of the coolest shots are shots we had to wait for four or five shows to go by before we could get them."
A distribution deal hasn't yet been inked, but the teaser clip, featuring onstage footage and such amusing backstage segments as Kilmister testing out a bass amp at deafening volume and telling dirty jokes, is available at Lemmymovie.com.
Motorhead will be on tour in Europe through mid-July, after which it heads Stateside for a stint with Heaven & Hell and Judas Priest in August. A three-week U.K. run follows in October.
